6.5 Magnitude Earthquake hit Italy on 30 October 2016 around 7:40am

On 30 October 2016 Sunday around 7:40 am a powerful earthquake struck close to Norcia. It was the most powerful earthquake over three decades.  Sunday’s quake was the strongest of a recent flurry of earthquakes. It registered 6.5 on the Richter scale and was felt along the entire length of the Italian boot. 






Dozens of historic buildings have been destroyed or seriously damaged by the 6.5 magnitude quake. There were about a dozen injuries, with one person described as being in serious condition. 

Fabrizio Curcio the head of civil protection has said at a press conference in the town of Rieti that “a dozen” people are reported injured. 

All the injuries are reported to be minor except for one who is said to be more seriously hurt. On August 24, 2016, a 6.0-6.2 magnitude quake hits mountain villages in a remote area straddling the regions of Umbria, Marche and Lazio. The small mountain town of Amatrice bears the brunt of the earthquake that kills 297 people and injures hundreds more.
